About

Hello there,

My name is Ankan Bhowmick and I am a 33 year old graphic designer and artist from New Delhi, India. I am currently employed with YAAP (erstwhile the Delhi wing of Elephant Design) as their design director with primary focus in branding and identity design. This is my story so far :

17th August, 1983

Born in Kolkata, West Bengal into a family of painters and musicians.

1986 - 2002

School. Worst years of my life. Average student, dyslexic. Excelled in creative writing and science. Wanted to study physics but could not do mathematics. Was introduced to the world of advertising through family friends. Started working part time as an assistant to a photographer.

2002

Finished school. Confused about life. Took the safe approach and joined college to do a bachelor's course in computer science. Loved the subject. Loved coding. Dropped out in three months since I could not deal with the extremely structured and boxed environment. Started learning German at Max Mueller Bhavan (Goethe Institute) for no good reason but read books about Bauhaus. I knew at that moment that I wanted to be a graphic designer.

2003 - 2005

Landed in Delhi wanting to be a graphic designer. Nobody wanted to hire a college dropout with no formal training in graphic design. A small design studio by the name of Autumn Design was looking for a studio assistant to do image cleanups, tracing and mockups and offered me a job. I jumped upon the opportunity often working 10 - 12 hours every day. Got small projects to design logos and packaging design. Excelled at making presentations.

2005 - 2007

Autumn Design shut operations in Delhi. I quit with a desire to move into mainline advertising. No luck. Started getting odd assignments from small pharmaceutical companies and publication houses. Struggled through long working hours with low to no payments. Eventually, started getting assignments from a few established art galleries to design their brochures, art books and exhibition collaterals. Was exposed to some of the finest Indian art and got a change to improve my aesthetics.

2007 - 2009

Decided that it was high time to get a formal education in Graphic Design. Applied to Cumbria Institute of the Arts in Carlisle, UK because of its quality program in graphic design and its picturesque location in the lake district, cut away from big city distraction. The two years in Cumbria proved to be a life changing. Voraciously studied graphic design under the tutelage of some of the most wonderful teachers. Showed a special interest in art direction and also started painting for the first time.

2009 - 2012

Started my journey at Elephant Design as a member of the environment design team and worked on very large scale projects. Learned how to work in teams, work on multi disciplinary design projects, manage time and clients and present work.

Later moved to the Delhi wing of Elephant Design

2012 - 2015

Bitten by the bug of entrepreneurship, started a boutique design studio called Studio Nautilus with my girlfriend. As with any fledgling enterprise, it was a roller coaster of successes and failures. Worked with a lot of clients in the food and beverages industry and also some international clients from UK and USA.

Learned about the business aspect of graphic design and how to juggle the personalities of a businessman an artist.

2015 - Present

Joined back Elephant Design (Delhi wing) as their design director.

Single handedly manage projects from start to finish. Along with my key function of a graphic designer, I often step into the shoes of client servicing and work closely with clients to understand their requirements and problems and advice them about solutions.

In June 2016, the Delhi wing of Elephant Design was acquired by YAAP Digital. I continue to act as their design director with no change in my clients profile.
